Evening Prayer
As the evening settles over us, we come with quiet hearts and open hands. This morning we asked for light on the path ahead, and now, looking back across the hours, we can see where it fell — small and steady, just enough for the next step. Thank You for that mercy. You did not hand us the whole road at once, and we are grateful for it; the little we could see turned out to be all we needed in order to keep walking. What felt like scarcity in the morning looks like tenderness tonight.
There were moments today when the way felt uncertain, when we strained to see farther than You had given us to see. Forgive our hurry. Forgive the way we sometimes mistake a dim light for no light at all, and the way we plan for roads we have not yet been asked to walk. Tonight we lay down the questions we could not answer and the worries we carried much farther than we needed to. We release the unfinished things into Your keeping, trusting that what mattered most today was never our clarity but Your faithfulness.
So we hand the day back to You now, whole — its brightness and its shadows, its kindnesses given and received, its small failures and its quiet victories. Let the light You gave us today become rest tonight. Watch over the people we love, and over anyone walking through a darker stretch of road than ours, who cannot yet see even one step ahead. Quiet our minds. Loosen our grip. And when morning comes, light the next step, and we will take it. Amen.
A Word of Reflection
There is something deeply tender in the image of God keeping a lamp burning. “You, LORD, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light.” (Psalm 18:28) A lamp is not a floodlight; it does not reveal the whole journey, only the ground beneath our feet — and yet for those who trust the One holding it, that has always been enough. At the end of a long day, we often notice how little we truly understood as we went, and how faithfully we were led anyway. Light for the path is not a promise of certainty; it is the promise of company. The same God who lit our way this morning stays awake over us tonight, and will be there when the sun comes up.
