Morning Prayer

Good and faithful God, the morning has come and we are grateful for it. We did nothing to earn this day; it was simply given to us, the way light is given, the way breath is given. Thank You for the rest of the night, for the roof above us, for the ordinary mercies we walk past a hundred times without ever noticing. Before we reach for our lists or our worries, we want to turn toward You first and let that be the way we begin.

We come with yesterday still clinging to us — the things we got wrong, the words we wish we could take back, the concerns we carried into sleep and found waiting for us when we woke. But You do not ration Your kindness, and Your mercy has not been worn thin by our repeating. It is new this morning, as new as the light on the window. So make us new along with the day. Where we were impatient, give us gentleness. Where we were afraid, give us a courage that does not depend on knowing how things end. Where we have failed someone, give us the humility to go back and make it right.

Walk with us through the hours ahead, whatever they turn out to hold. Let us be people through whom Your mercy reaches someone else today — a patient word, an unhurried moment, a kindness no one was expecting. Keep us steady when the day gets loud, and honest when it gets hard. And when we grow weary, remind us that tomorrow’s mercies are already prepared, and that we are held by a love that begins again every single morning. We step into today trusting You.

A Word of Reflection

Scripture tells us, “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:22–23). What makes these words remarkable is where they were written — in the middle of a book of grief, by someone watching his world come apart. Even there, he could see the morning arriving on schedule. Mercy, it turns out, is not something we can run low on; it is delivered fresh, in step with the sunrise. We are never further along than the first day of God’s kindness toward us. Whatever we carried into last night, this morning meets us with enough.
