Morning Prayer
Good and faithful God, the week is new, and so are we in Your hands. Before we pick up anything else this morning — the calendar, the phone, the long list already waiting for us — we want to thank You. Thank You for sleep that did its quiet work, for light we did nothing to earn, for the simple and staggering gift of another beginning. You did not owe us this day, and yet here it is, unopened and full of room, and we would rather begin it with You than try to catch up with You later.
We know what Mondays can do to a heart. They can arrive carrying last week’s failures like luggage we forgot to set down. So remind us this morning that Your mercies are not rationed and Your patience is not thinning. Meet us new today: new in kindness toward the people we will pass, new in courage for the thing we have been avoiding, new in honesty about what we cannot do on our own. Where we grew weary or short-tempered or discouraged, let this be a true fresh start and not simply a fresh calendar.
Go with us into the ordinary hours — the meetings, the errands, the messages, the small decisions no one else will notice. Make us useful and unhurried. Give us eyes for the person who needs a word of encouragement, and the humility to receive one when it is offered to us. Steady us when the pace picks up, and keep us mindful that no hour of this day is too small for Your attention. Bless the work of our hands, and let whatever we build today be worth Your keeping. We step into this week with open hands, grateful and unafraid, because You are already there ahead of us. Amen.
A Word of Reflection
There is a reason Scripture ties God’s mercy to the sunrise rather than to our performance. “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:22-23) These words were written by a man surveying ruins, not by someone having a pleasant week — which is exactly what makes them so sturdy. Mercy that is new every morning is mercy we cannot exhaust, no matter how yesterday went. We do not have to earn a fresh start; we only have to notice that one has already been given. However this week begins, His faithfulness is the thing that showed up first.
