Morning Prayer
Good and generous God, morning has come again, and with it the plain gift of breath, of light, of another chance to begin. We did not earn this day and we cannot repeat it, so we receive it with open hands. Thank You for the ordinary mercies that were already waiting for us before we thought to look for them: a roof, a bed, a name spoken kindly, work to do and people to do it for. Before we ask You for a single thing, we want to say thank You, because gratitude has a way of putting everything else back into its right size.
We come to You honestly this morning: we are not certain we have enough for today. Not enough patience for the people who will test it, not enough energy for what is already on the calendar, not enough wisdom for the decisions that will arrive without warning. But we are slowly learning that You have never asked us to be enough. You have only asked us to come, empty-handed and willing, and to let Your grace be the thing that is sufficient. So fill what is lacking in us. Let Your strength show up precisely where we are weakest, and let us stop being embarrassed by the places where we run out.
Give us grace for this one day, then. Not a stockpile for the month, not a reserve for every hardship we can imagine, just enough for the hours directly in front of us. Grace to speak gently when we would rather be right. Grace to keep going when progress is slow and no one is watching. Grace to notice someone else’s need in the middle of our own. And where we fail today, give us grace for that too, the kind that lifts us back up rather than holds us down. We step into this day trusting that what You supply will be exactly what it requires. Amen.
A Word of Reflection
Paul asked three times for a burden to be taken away, and the answer he received was not removal but supply: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” — 2 Corinthians 12:9. It is a strange kind of comfort, because it does not promise an easier day; it promises a present God in the day we actually have. Sufficient is a quieter word than abundant, and a truer one. It means enough, exactly enough, arriving as it is needed rather than stored up in advance. Most of our worry comes from measuring today’s supply against a lifetime of imagined demands, so let today be the only day we try to carry, and let grace be the reason we can.
