Evening Prayer
God of the evening hours, we come to You as the light thins and the noise of the day finally settles. This morning we asked for courage, and now, at the close of the hours, we bring that same courage back to You — some of it spent well, some of it still resting unused in our hands. We thank You for every moment we stepped forward when standing still would have been easier, and for the quiet grace that carried us through everything we could not control. We are grateful for the ordinary bravery of simply showing up: the hard conversation we did not avoid, the honest answer we gave, the patient waiting we did not think we had in us.
Where we faltered today, we will not hide it from You. There were moments we chose comfort over conviction, and moments we let fear speak louder than faith. We lay those down here rather than carrying them into sleep. Take our regrets and turn them slowly into wisdom. Take the work we did not finish and hold it through the night, as only You can hold anything. We loosen our grip on tomorrow’s uncertainties, trusting that the One who went ahead of us this morning has not stopped walking ahead of us now that it is dark.
So we rest — not because everything is settled, but because You are steady. Quiet our restless thoughts. Ease the tension we have carried in our shoulders and in our hearts without noticing. Let sleep come as a gift rather than an escape, and let us wake knowing that courage was never ours to manufacture in the first place. It was always Yours to give, and You give it freely, evening by evening and morning by morning, to people who have no more of their own. Into Your keeping we lay down this day and ourselves. Amen.
A Word of Reflection
There is something worth noticing in the promise, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” — Isaiah 41:10. It does not tell us the road will be smooth, only that we will not walk it by ourselves. The courage God offers is less a feeling we summon than a presence we lean on, and at the end of a long day that difference matters enormously — we are far too tired to manufacture bravery, and it turns out we never had to. The hand that upheld us through these hours does not grow weary when we do. So we can close our eyes with our fears named and still unresolved, and be held anyway. Whatever tomorrow asks of us, God will already be standing in it.
