Morning Prayer
God of every morning, thank You for this one. Thank You for breath in our lungs, for light at the window, for the simple and undeserved mercy of beginning again. Before the day fills up with its noise, we want to be still with You for a moment. You already know what waits on the other side of this quiet — the tasks, the conversations, the hopes we are holding carefully, the things we cannot control no matter how early we rise to worry about them. We bring all of it to You now, not because we expect it to disappear, but because we would rather carry it beside You than alone.
Teach us today what it means to be guarded. Not hardened, not closed off, not braced against everyone we meet, but held — our hearts kept steady by a peace we could never have manufactured ourselves. When anxiety rises, remind us that we are allowed to ask, allowed to be honest, allowed to set a burden down at Your feet and walk on without it. Let gratitude be our first instinct rather than our last resort. Help us notice the good things quickly today, and to name them out loud while they are still in front of us.
And let Your peace be something other people can feel in the room with us. Make us gentle with those who are anxious, patient with those who are hurrying, and kind to anyone carrying a heavy memory this morning. Wherever this Friday takes us, go with us, and keep our hearts at rest in You. Amen.
A Word of Reflection
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7) Notice that we are not told to stop feeling — we are told where to bring what we feel. The peace comes after the asking, and it arrives as a guard rather than as an explanation. It does not always answer the question that worried us; it simply stands watch over the part of us that was beginning to fray. That is why thanksgiving belongs in the middle of the instruction, because remembering what God has already done steadies us for what He has not yet revealed. A peace like that is worth beginning a day with.
