Evening Prayer — Sacrifice | Friday, June 5, 2026

Evening Prayer

Lord of all grace, as this Friday draws to a close, we come to you with hearts that are both heavy and full. Heavy, because we have spent time today sitting with the weight of what love truly costs. Full, because we have been reminded again that the greatest act of sacrifice in all of history was done willingly — for us. Tonight, we do not rush past that truth. We let it settle over us like a blanket, warming every tired and uncertain place within us.

We confess that we do not always live as people who understand what was given on our behalf. We hold grudges when we have been forgiven everything. We grasp at comfort when we have been called to give. We protect ourselves when we have been invited to love boldly and openly. Tonight, we release those tendencies into your hands, and we ask for a heart that is slowly, gently being reshaped into one that looks more like yours.

Thank you for a week of grace. Thank you for every moment you were present even when we did not notice. As we rest tonight, may we wake tomorrow with a deeper understanding of what it means to be loved at such great cost — and what it means to carry that love into the world around us.

A Word of Reflection

To sit with the theme of sacrifice at the end of a week is to end well. Jesus himself drew the line clearly between love as a feeling and love as a choice. “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (John 15:13). This is the love that held nothing back. As we close this week, may we carry a quiet gratitude for that love — and may it become the measure by which we give ourselves to the people in our lives.
