Morning Prayer
Good morning, God of steady love. A new week opens in front of us and we begin it by simply thanking You — for breath, for light at the window, for the plain mercy of being given another day. We did not earn this morning and we cannot guarantee tomorrow, and somehow that is a comfort rather than a worry, because both belong to You. Before we make a single plan, we want to notice that You are already here, already attentive, already ahead of us in the hours we have not yet lived.
Anchor us in Your faithfulness today. We know how easily we drift: toward hurry, toward comparison, toward the quiet fear that everything depends on how well we perform. So remind us what is actually true. You have been faithful to generations who never saw the end of what they hoped for, and You have been faithful to us in ways we only recognized much later. You kept promises we had stopped watching for. You carried us through weeks we were certain would undo us. Let that record settle into us this morning and hold, the way an anchor holds — not by keeping the water calm, but by keeping us from being swept somewhere we were never meant to go.
Give us honest work and the willingness to do it well. Give us patience with the people we will meet, especially the ones who try it, and give them patience with us. Where this week brings news we cannot control, let our first instinct be to turn toward You rather than away. Where it brings ordinary hours with nothing remarkable in them, help us find You there too, since most of a faithful life is made of unremarkable hours. Keep our hearts soft, our words kind, and our hope fixed on the One who does not change. We go into this day trusting You. Amen.
A Word of Reflection
Mornings are when we are most prone to plan and least inclined to listen, which may be exactly why the psalmist begins there: “Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love, for in you I trust. Make me know the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul” (Psalm 143:8). Notice the order — he asks to hear about God’s love before he asks for direction. Guidance is easier to receive once we are convinced of the goodness of the One giving it. To be anchored in God’s faithfulness is not to know what the week holds; it is to know who holds the week. That confidence does not remove uncertainty, but it changes what uncertainty feels like. We can step into Monday unsure of the details and still be entirely sure of God.
