Morning Prayer
Good and generous God, thank You for this new morning. Before the day gathers speed, we want to pause and simply say thank You. Thank You for breath in our lungs, for the gift of rest, for coffee warming our hands, and for the people who share our lives. Thank You for mercies we noticed yesterday and for the many more we never even saw. We did not earn this day, and yet here it is, fresh and full of possibility, placed into our hands by Your kindness. Help us receive it with open, grateful hearts.
Lord, we know that gratitude does not always come easily. Some of us are walking through seasons of waiting, grief, or uncertainty, and thankfulness can feel far away. Teach us that giving thanks is not pretending everything is fine. It is choosing to notice that You are present in every season, the bright ones and the heavy ones alike. Open our eyes today to the small gifts tucked into ordinary hours: a kind word from a coworker, a moment of laughter, a problem that turned out smaller than we feared, a quiet minute to pray. Let each of those moments turn our hearts back toward You.
As we step into this Tuesday, shape our words so they build others up instead of tearing them down. Where we are tempted to complain, give us eyes to see what is still good. Where we are tempted to rush, slow us down enough to be thankful. Let our gratitude spill over into generosity, patience, and encouragement for the people around us. May everyone we meet today catch a glimpse of Your goodness through the way we live. We offer You this day, and we thank You in advance for walking every step of it with us. Amen.
A Word of Reflection
The apostle Paul encouraged the early church with words that still speak to us today: “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18) Paul does not say to give thanks for all circumstances, but in them, which is a gentle and important difference. Gratitude is not denial of hardship; it is the choice to recognize God’s presence right in the middle of it. When we begin the day with thanksgiving, we train our hearts to look for His fingerprints everywhere we go. Over time, a thankful heart becomes a steady heart, able to face every season with hope.
