Evening Prayer
Faithful Shepherd of our souls, we come to the close of this day with tired hands and full hearts. The hours have carried us through conversations, responsibilities, small victories, and quiet disappointments, and now the light is fading. Some of us are ending this day encouraged, and some of us are ending it worn thin; either way, we come to You just as we are, knowing You welcome us without condition. We are thankful that You walked beside us through every one of these hours, even in the moments when we forgot to look for You. Whatever this day asked of us, You supplied what we needed, and we pause now simply to say thank You.
This morning we came to You weary and asking for rest. Tonight we bring that same longing back to You, but with open palms instead of anxious ones. We release the unfinished tasks, the words we wish we had said differently, and the worries that tried to follow us home. We lay down the burdens we were never meant to carry overnight. Quiet the restless thoughts that keep circling in our minds, and settle our bodies into the deep, restoring sleep that only You can give. Let our homes be places of peace tonight, and let those we love find rest in You as well.
We trust that You will keep watch while we sleep. You do not grow tired, and You do not need us to hold the world together until morning. So we rest, not because everything is finished, but because You are faithful. Restore our souls in the stillness of this night, and wake us tomorrow renewed, ready to follow You again. In the name of Jesus, our peace and our rest, we pray. Amen.
A Word of Reflection
Rest is not something we earn by finishing everything on our list; it is a gift the Good Shepherd lovingly provides. The psalmist writes, “He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul” (Psalm 23:2–3, KJV). Notice that it is the Shepherd who leads us to rest, sometimes even gently making us lie down when we would keep pressing on. As this day ends, we can trust that same tender care is guiding us toward stillness. Our weariness is not hidden from Him, and our restoration is in His hands. Tonight, let us follow where He leads—into quiet, into peace, and into the rest our souls were made for.
